Table of contents
I often take detailed reading and study notes but also write 2000+ word blog posts. The length makes it difficult to quickly get an overview over the note. I'd like to suggest a "table of contents" feature that could be switched on or off for each note. With it, you could easily see all the h1, h2 and h3 headings and jump to them with one click. Maybe take a look at how Notion and Nimbus Notes are doing this.
May 2022 Update: It's live https://www.amplenote.com/help/table_of_contents#Table_of_Contents
Update July 2022: We left this ticket open for awhile to consider whether/when to upgrade to an auto-updating ToC, but ultimately we have found it convenient to be able to touch up ToC after inserting it, so we're going to call the {toc} implementation complete for v1, but we are open to augmenting it in a future v2.

Nick CollerUlysses does this very cleanly.

AureliusI agree that Ulysses’ ToC works really well. It appears automatically in the sidebar, so it’s always available for navigation. Very handy for longer notes, especially when switching between notes frequently (as this takes you back to the top of the note text).

ThomasSome overview would be great. As an alternative to ToC also some *outliner* functionality could help: collapse & expand, and zoom-in (cf. Workflowy, Dynalist, Moo.do, etc)

ClausReally need this one.
Any ETA on it Bill? -

Lucian AdminHello Claus! While there's no ETA for this feature as of yet, we can now use [[# linking to manually create tables of content inside notes.

good while reading, not while writing.. -

weirdWhile I'm really glad there's a workaround (creating links to sections), "[[#" only displays the first 4 search results for headings, so that makes it kind of hard to create a table of contents unless you already remember the exact order and rough names of each heading in your note...
How about a way to use the arrow keys to keep scrolling through the search results so that you can view more headings without knowing them in advance? Part of the point of a table of contents is because you can't remember what all the headings were. Definitely a huge pain anyway.
Really just need a way to insert an outline of the entire note. -

Ian greigThis kind of navigation essential on longer notes and posts. I use it a lot.

Bill AdminFor members who are on a Pro plan or above, you can now insert a Table of Contents using {toc} https://www.amplenote.com/help/table_of_contents#Table_of_Contents

DirkHi Bill, having a toc without auto update makes little sence to me - especially since updating ist means to delete the old toc and re-type the code. Doing it on a mobile device isn´t intuitiv at all. Touching the toc - as you pointed out - is something never do.
I assumed that the current toc implementation is the first draft of the final version, so please keep on working on it!
